Horton Housing is a not-for-profit Housing Association that manages a wide range of different housing, training and support services across Bradford, Calderdale, Kirklees and North Yorkshire. We offer support to a variety of people, including those who are homeless or at risk, young people and refugees. We offer accommodation, skills and language support, and use a strength based approach to help the people we support achieve their goals in a manner which works for them.
We are currently recruiting for a Housing Support Worker to join the SHAP Dispersed Accommodation Service (part of Next Steps). The service supports people with high levels of need, individuals who may have experienced ill health, poor mental health, drugs or alcohol challenges.
The role
In this role you will be responsible for supporting people in the service to move into permanent housing. You will encourage support and assist people with their confidence to enable them to make positive decisions. You will assist clients in the practical and emotional aspects of maintaining their accommodation and liaising with other support services. You will ensure immediate needs are met, such as access to welfare benefits, food, clothing and health care. You will have the ability to carry out domestic duties and minor repairs to ensure clients have a clean and safe living environment. You will be the lead and co-ordinate involvement activities in the service, for example cooking, gardening, baking etc. These activities will support and enhance people’s social and person development skills.
What we are looking for
- Experience of working with people who have a range of needs, such as drug or alcohol challenges, rough sleeping, mental health challenges and a history of offending.
- Experience, knowledge, training and/or professional development for the post (e.g. mental health awareness, welfare benefits, housing, drug & alcohol problems)
- Health and safety task including in the maintenance of properties (i.e. fire alarm tests, property checks, reporting repairs etc.)
- Equality and diversity, which promotes and values people as individuals.
- Planning, organising and prioritise work to maintain accurate and timely reports.
- Have excellent communication, report writing and ICT skills.
- Ability to maintain professional boundaries.
- Valid driving licence and own a vehicle for business use.
- Enhanced DBS.
